SOBB WINS SENIOR MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
Jim Sobb captured the 2008 Illinois PGA Senior Match Play Championship over Michael Harrigan 2-up after making birdie on the 17th hole at Shoreacres in Lake Bluff, Ill.
Sobb made birdie on the first hole to go 1-up - a lead that would remain until the par-4 11th. Both players ended up in the greenside bunker. Sobb pitched out but left a lengthy putt. Harrigan was able to get up and down for par, while Sobb bogeyed. The match would stay all square until the par-4 16th. Harrigan's tee shot came to rest in the right rough and his approach to the green was obstructed by trees. Harrigan was forced the play his second shot left of the green, and the ball came to rest in a bunker. A pitch and two putts later, Harrigan was in with bogey while Sobb posted par, helping him claim a 1-up advantage. On the par-4 17th, both players reached the green in two. Harrigan's 20-foot birdie putt would miss while Sobb drained a 5-footer for birdie and the match.
The top-seed Sobb, Ivanhoe Club, reached the finals after defeating Gary Groh (5), Bob O'Link G.C., 2 & 1 in the first semi-final match of the day.
In the second semi-final, Harrigan (6), Diversey Golf Range, defeated defending champion Billy Rosinia (2) of Flagg Creek G.C., 4 & 3 to reach the finals against Sobb, his former assistant golf professional at Thorngate C.C.
The Illinois PGA would like to thank Shoreacres for once again hosting this event. |
